Child Haven, a part of the Clark County Department of Family Services, is an emergency shelter that provides temporary care and treatment for abused, neglected and abandoned children between the ages of three days and 18 years. Child Haven seeks to provide a safe and nurturing environment for children on a temporary basis.
These children are victims of physical abuse, neglect, sexual abuse, and/or abandonment by their parents. They frequently come to the shelter at a time of crisis and the County provides them with a safe and nurturing environment with caring staff, healthy food and medical care. Often the children come with multiple unmet needs due to years of neglect and they are likely to have emotional difficulties, lags in educational achievement, and special developmental needs.
Children remain in the emergency shelter facility until a more permanent safe alternative can be identified. For some children, the next move is a return to the family home with services and support to remove any barriers to safety. For other children, it is placement with a relative who has an existing bond with the child and is able to provide safe care. Some children are unable to return home or move in with a relative and move into the foster care system and are sometimes placed with an adoptive family.
